MCM Design - EDA Vendors
Once you get past the Big 10 MCM EDA vendors there is a wide variety
of affordable, but generally less capable, PCB/MCM design tools. There's
no easy way to tell if one of these tools will be your needs, but by
reviewing the product specs and talking with existing users you can at least
make reasonable decisions. The huge tradeoff that comes with most
of these tools is ease of use vs technical capability. Generally, I
suggest using the minimum tool set that can economically get the job done.
If you design 10+ products a year, then using the major tools can work out
well because you keep your skills honed. But for fewer designs, going
with an easier to learn (or re-learn) tool supports such stop-and-go
shopload.
