Mailing Lists
While the USENET is an excellent way to broadcast information, it has the problem that anyone can send anything - including spam messages! Private discussion groups, handled through email, are known as mailing lists. Through these lists, content can be moderated to prevent proliferation of unwanted advertisements. More importantly, the mailing list provides the information directly to your inbox! You only have to sign up once. Because of the controls on the mailing lists, such lists typically attract only those folks who are really serious about the topics - a boon to the other serious participants in the mailing list.
