GBIC >> MCM >> Vendors - Turnkey

Vendors - Turnkey
Many, if not most, users of MCMs do not want to participate in the development of an MCM. They need a particular functionality and would like to turn over the complete cycle of development and manufacture to a third party. Companies who provide such a complete service (concept, design, manufacture, and test) are known as turnkey organizations. Customers simply provide the requirements that need to be met and the turnkey organization does everything else needed to put the MCMs in the customers hands - on time and within budget!

Military Turnkey MCM Suppliers

It is typically the case that packaging organizations within military companies were established to provide MCM capabilities in support of other programs found within those companies. However, because MCM volumes tend to be low, internal factories often have excess capacity which they are willing to sell outside, including design services to insure that the MCMs are compatible with the processes and manufacturing capabilities of the turnkey organization.

Military organizations are best known for providing MCMs of the highest complexity and performance - as is often needed by their military customers. They typically have a broad spectrum of technical resources at their disposal and are very capable at understanding a customer's requirements and at providing excellent technical solutions.

Custom MCMs are often used in military systems because the required functionality is seldom available in an off-the-shelf commercial MCM and is one of the key reasons why internal MCM organizations develop in the first place. Through mergers or acquistions, it is not unusual for military companies to have more one MCM centers.

Commercial Turnkey MCM Suppliers

As in most commercial products, cost outweighs almost all other factors in deciding which components to include in the product. For that reason, MCMs are used sparingly in commercial products. However there are so many potential applications for MCMs that the volume of MCMs produced for commercial products is actually quite large, but focussed on a fairly limited number of applications.

The line between commercial and military turnkey suppliers of MCMs is not that sharp. Often a commercial organization can provide the performance and environmental compability needed for certain military applications. In such cases it is typical that the commercial organization will offer lower development and recurring (production costs). In today's military environment where the military are getting more and more cost conscious the use of commercial companies, who offer both military and commercial MCMs, is on the rise. Military MCM organizations are finding themselves forced to make significant cost reductions or to focus on only the high-end performance MCMs.

If a company provides both military and commerical MCMs, they will be found in both lists on this page.
