VML itself is free as part of the MSIE installation. There are no competing versions - just the one that Microsoft has developed. However, there are several companies which offers graphical interfaces with which to develop VML graphics and which will create the HTML code that goes with it. There are also a few other tools on the market which web designers might find a need for.

VML Editors

  • Microsoft: VML Generator (free)
Provides GUI for creating graphics and the corresponding VML code. Complexity of results is somewhat limited. Not particularly simple to use, more like a tag generator than a graphical editor.

  • Dynamic Drive: VML Editor (free)
This editor is built into a pair of web pages. It is not a standalone application. You can use the mouse to basically demonstrate a variety of VML and DHTML effects, then generate the code that goes with them.

  • Graphite
The editor is contained within a single web page that can be used online or downloaded to your PC. Supports a variety of basic shape creation and color functions. No line or curve support.

  • Software Mechanics: VML maker ($100)
Generates VML files by printing from your Windows illustration program. Also generates .htm files.
